“You have to be fearless to play the French horn. By common consent it’s the hardest orchestral instrument, and the nightmare of every horn player — ‘splitting’ an exposed high note — is an ever-present possibility. But not it seems for Ben Goldscheider, who exudes the confidence of an athlete on stage.

That rock-steady feeling combined with his musical gifts has already carried him far. He’s principal horn of Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, he’s appeared as soloist with orchestras from Tokyo to Finland, and at the age of only 29 he’s a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. As if playing the horn brilliantly weren’t challenging enough Goldscheider also relishes playing brand-new pieces, some involving live electronics — to date he’s commissioned more than 50 new pieces. This summer and autumn he’ll be playing new works by Brian Elias alongside sculptures by Anish Kapoor in the Hayward Gallery. But he also has a deep feeling for the romantic side of the French horn, and the wonderful heroic, open-air side of the instrument— which you can hear blazing out in the recording below.”
